Michael Wolf, geboren 1954 in München, wuchs in Kanada, Deutschland und den USA auf. Er studierte zunächst an der University of California, Berkeley, und später Visuelle Kommunikation bei Otto Steinert an der Folkwang-Schule in Essen. 1994 zog Wolf nach Hongkong, wo er acht Jahre als Vertragsfotograf für das Magazin Stern arbeitete. Ab 2001 konzentrierte sich Wolf auf eigene künstlerische Projekte, von denen viele als Bildbände veröffentlicht wurden. Im Mittelpunkt von Michael Wolfs Arbeit steht das Leben in Megastädten. Seine Projekte dokumentieren sowohl die Architektur als auch die Alltagskultur von Großstädten. Während Hongkong den Lebensmittelpunkt des Fotografen darstellte, entstanden auch wichtige Werkserien in Chicago, Tokyo und Paris. Michael Wolf starb am 24. April 2019 auf der Insel Cheung Chau in Hongkong.
Wolfs Arbeiten wurden unter anderem auf der Biennale für Architektur in Venedig, der Biennale für Architektur in São Paulo, in der Aperture Gallery in New York, im Museum Center Vapriikki, Tampere, in Finnland, dem Museum der Arbeit in Hamburg, dem Museum August Kestner in Hannover, dem Folkwang Museum in Essen, auf der Hong Kong Shenzhen Bi-city Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture, im Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, den Deichtorhallen in Hamburg, bei den Rencontres d’Arles in Frankreich, im Fotomuseum Den Haag und in der Fondazione Stelline in Mailand gezeigt. Seine Arbeiten befinden sich in zahlreichen Sammlungen, darunter im Metropolitan Museum of Art und dem Brooklyn Museum in New York, im San José Museum of Art in Kalifornien, im Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, dem Museum Folkwang in Essen, im Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, im Hong Kong Heritage Museum und im M+ in Hongkong. Wolf gewann 2005 und 2010 den ersten Preis des World Press Photo Award und erhielt 2011 eine ehrenvolle Erwähnung. In den Jahren 2010 und 2016 wurde er für den Fotopreis Prix Pictet nominiert.

Michael Wolf (b. 1954, Munich) grew up in Canada, Germany, and the United States, studying liberal arts at the University of California, Berkeley, and visual communication with Otto Steinert at the Folkwang School in Essen, Germany. Wolf moved to Hong Kong in 1994, where he worked for eight years as a contract photographer for Stern magazine. From 2001, Wolf focused on his own artistic projects, many of which have been published as books. Wolf’s work focuses on life in megacities. His projects document both the architecture and the vernacular culture of metropolises. While the photographer continued living and working in Hong Kong, he also created a significant series of works in Chicago and Paris. Michael Wolf died on April 24, 2019 on Cheung Chau Island in Hong Kong.
Wolf’s work has been exhibited in numerous locations, including the Venice Biennale of Architecture, the International Architecture Biennale of São Paulo, Aperture Gallery in New York, Vapriikki Museum Centre in Tampere, Finland, the Hamburg Museum of Work, Museum August Kestner in Hannover, Museum Folkwang in Essen, the Shenzhen & Hong Kong Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture, the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, Deichtorhallen Hamburg, Rencontres d’Arles, Fotomuseum Den Haag, and the Fondazione Stelline in Milan. His work is held in many permanent collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Brooklyn Museum in New York, the San José Museum of Art in California, the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, the Museum Folkwang in Essen, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, and the Hong Kong Heritage Museum and M+ in Hong Kong. In 2005 and 2010, Wolf won first prize in the World Press Photo Contest, and received an honourable mention in 2011. In 2010 and 2016, Wolf was shortlisted for the Prix Pictet photography prize.
